2025 Mombasa Open – Peter Majur Manyang wins

The 2025 Mombasa Open concluded today with Peter Majur Manyang of South Sudan clinching the event with a score of 5.5 out of six rounds and going home with KES 50,000 (USD 400) as his cash prize and a floating trophy christened ‘Athena’ after the ancient Greek goddess of wisdom.

He beat a strong field of 70 players, which included five compatriots and eleven Ugandans, plus a host of Kenyan players.

Five players tied for second place with five points each.  These included Garang Panthou Joh Madol, Mark Nyola, Manyok Chaderek and Mehul Gohil.   However, on a tie-break, the silver went to Garang Panthou Joh Madol and the bronze to Mark Nyola.

The total cash prize for this section was KES 125,000 (USD 1,000).

Ladies Section

Wanjiru Kimani was the surprise winner of the Ladies Section with 5.5 points.  WFM Sasha Mongeli also scored 5.5 points but had a lower tie-break.  Both players equally shared the KES 35,000.

This section saw just under 40 participants taking

U1700 Section

Amos Wayne from JKUAT won the U1700 Section with a score of 5.5 points to go home with KES 20,000.

Five players tied for second place with five points and included Mwega Nkanda, Achol Deng, Roberts Wamalwa, James Lelaono and Arnold Nekemiah Ikonde, who equally shared the KES 30,000 prize fund.

This section saw 60 players battling it out for top honours

Junior Section

This section, with a time control of 30 minutes per player over six rounds, had a total of 130 participants split into several age groups, namely the U8, U10, U12 and U18 age groups.
