2025 Africa Youth Chess Championship – Kenya win 10 medals

The 2025 Africa Youth Chess Championship, hosted in Harare, the capital city of Zimbabwe, ended on a high note, with Kenya winning a total of 10 medals.
Gold Medalist

Cyprian Mbaabu – U16 Open

WCM Elizabeth Cassidy Maina – U14 Girls

Nathaniel Manyeki  – U10 Open

Amanad Breetalizah – U10 Girls

Silver Medalist

Davidson Waweru Mugo – U14 Open

Winnie Kaburo – U12 Girls

Bronze Medalist

Gene Pence Mukwana – U8 Open

Jayne Awuor – U8 Girls,

Ryan Kimani Danson – U12 Open

Fantalis Lucy Nduta – U14 Girls

Team Kenya had a total of 78 participants at the event, which saw a record 547 participants from 16 countries.
The outstanding results were credited to a two-week intensive residential training programme undertaken before the championship.  The training was led by Head Coach Dr Victor Ng’ani, assisted by Coach Tom Amwai, whose technical preparation, game analysis and psychological conditioning played a vital role in readying the players for high-level competition.

Uganda sent a powerful team of 18 players and returned with 1 gold, 2 silver, and 3 bronze medals.
