KCB Chess Team lift 2025 Kenya National League Title

The KCB Chess Team lifted the 2025 Kenya National League title by an incredible, slender margin, beating Mavens Chess Tacticians on the third tie-break, which used the Sonneborn-Berger method to break the tie.

KCB Chess Team scored 38 points, the same as Maven Tacticians, with both teams tying on the second tie break with 55.5 points as well. It was this third tie-break that ultimately gave KCB Chess Club the title with 852 compared to 851.5, highlighting the importance of tie-break rules in the competition.

It was a heartbreaking moment for Maven Tacticians to lose the title that was within their grasp by such a slender margin.

Equity Bank Chess Club clinched the bronze medal with 35 points.

Nairobi Chess Club, the oldest club in the region, ran out of steam in the second half and ended in 7th place with 27 match points.

The Premier Division saw 17 teams compete for top honours, with the bottom three teams, Elite Chess Academy & Club, Kisumu Chess Club, and Knights Chess Academy relegated to the Super Division, which is the lower tier of the league system.

Super Division

The Super Division had two sections: Section A with 18 teams and Section B with 17 teams. The top three teams from each section then faced off in a round robin play-off to select the top three teams for promotion to the Premier Division.

Cooperative University, PMadol A Chess Club & Victoria Conquerors were promoted to the Premier Division.
