WCM Jully Mutisya is crowned 2025 Kenya National Ladies Champion
WCM Jully Mutisya won the 2025 Kenya National Ladies Championship title for the first time in her brilliant career, scoring 8 points out of 11 rounds in the hotly contested event, which featured the top 11 players. She also carved her name into Kenyan chess history by becoming the first lady to win a car, which was the top prize.
WFM Sasha Mongeli, on the other hand, who is a two-time national champion (2023 & 2024), tied with 8 points but had a lower tie-break, missing the car keys but taking home KES 100,000 (USD 800).
Nicole Albright of Mavens Chess Club came out third with a score of seven points. Zuri Kaloki who is only 15 years old was fourth with six points.
The round robin event also doubled as the Olympiad team selection event, which saw Madelta Glenda secure the fifth slot with 5.5 points. These five ladies will represent Kenya at the Olympiad in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, in September 2026.
WCM Joyce Nyaruai Ndirangu, the two-time Kenya National Ladies Champion (2017 & 2022), had a disappointing run. She finished with 3.5 points and placing 8th in the final standings.
The finals were hosted at the Westwood Hotel in Westlands, Nairobi, and saw the top eleven players from the 2025 Grand Prix selection events compete for the car and the five Olympiad slots on offer.
The event had an average rating of 1792, making it one of the strongest ladies’ events in Kenya. The average age of the players was 25, underlying the massive growth of chess amongst the female population.
