2026 African Youth Chess Championship – Kenya wins 10 medals
The 2026 African Youth Chess Championship ended on a high note in Entebbe, Uganda, with Kenya winning two gold, four silver and four bronze medals out of the 36 medals on offer.
Egypt topped the medal standings with six gold, four silver, and one bronze,, confirming once again their status as the African chess giants.
Host nation Uganda did well to finish second with three gold, two silver and three bronze medals.
The event, which was the 17th edition, ran from 15th to 21st May 2026 at the Imperial Botanical Beach Hotel in Entebbe, and featured separate sections U8, U10, U12, U14, U16, and U18 for both boys and girls.
A total of 1,065 players from ten African federations took part, with Kenya bringing in a massive team of 753 players!
FM Ahmed Kandil of Egypt was the top-ranked player with a FIDE rating of 2294, and as expected, he won the gold in the U18 section. In the same section, FM Jadon Simiyu the 2025 Kenya National Champion missed a podium when he scored an impressive 6.6 points to end up 4th in the ranking.
Kenya’s gold medals came from WCM Winnie Kaburo in the U12 and WFM Elizabeth Cassidy Maina in the U16.
