    2026 Quo Vadis Nyeri Open – Chrisphinus Wanjiru crowned champion

    The 2026 Quo Vadis Nyeri Open ended with Chrisphinus Wanjiru crowned champion, scoring 7 points from 8 rounds, beating a strong field of 90 participants.

    Hillary Sagwa also scored seven points but finished second on a tie-break.  Both Chrisphinus Wanjiru and Hillary Sagwa equally shared the cash prize of KES 60,000.

    Hesham Mohammed Zemam from Midland International School, who was unrated, surprised many by finishing second with 6.5 points and winning KES 10,000.

    2025 Kenya National Ladies Champion CM Jully Mutisya won the Ladies prize with six points and received KES 30,000.

    This event formed part of the 2026 Kenya Grand Prix Circuit, serving as a qualifier for the Kenya National Championship scheduled for December. The Quo Vadis Chess Club organised the tournament.

    Name of the event – 2026 Quo Vadis Nyeri Open.

    Venue – Quo Vadis Youth Hub, Nyeri.

    Dates – 5th, 6th & 7th June 2026.

    Format – 8 rounds with 90 minutes time control for Open Section & six rounds with 25 minutes time control for the Junior Section.

    Prize Fund – KES 147,000.

    Quo Vadis Chess Club

    The Quo Vadis Chess Club is one of the programs under Quo Vadis Youth Hub, a centre for youth mentorship and formation under the Catholic Archdiocese of Nyeri, which is a brainchild of His Grace Anthony Muheria, the Archbishop of Nyeri.  

    ‘Quo Vadis‘ is Latin for ‘Where are you going?‘ We 

    The centre opposite Dedan Kimathi University, in Nyeri, aims to help young people know where they are going through mentorship programs.

    The club was established with the idea to grow chess in the Mt. Kenya Region by nurturing young chess players through various programs. 

    The chess club meets every Friday from 2 pm to 6 pm at the Quo Vadis Youth Hub. For more information about the club, please get in touch with the club secretary, Sylvia Gitari, at Nyambugitari@gmail.com.
