1st Nairobi Chess Club Grand Prix – Peter Majur crowned Champion
Peter Majur of South Sudan powered his way to victory in the 1st Nairobi Chess Club Grand Prix with a perfect score of six points out of six rounds to go home with KES 30,000 (USD 230).
Ngong Atem Gak, originally from South Sudan, but resident in Kenya, took second place with 5 points. Garang Panthou Joh Madol grabbed third place with 5 points but with a lower tie-break. They shared the KES 30,000 cash prize equally.
It was Nairobi Chess Club’s first event, part of the Kenya Grand Prix Circuit, where players earn valuable GP points to qualify for the 2026 Kenya National Chess Championship.
The 3 days six round event was hugely successful, with 60 participants in the Open Section and several talented junior players putting on an excellent display of their capabilities. These include Abel Taji (U16 years) of Mavens Chess Club, who scored 4.5 points to finish joint third and 5th in the ranking. Faraja Mumo Muli (U12 years) of PMadol Chess Club scored an impressive 4 points, finishing 7th in the ranking.
Ladies Section
The juniors in the Ladies Section were dominant, with Jasmine Akinyi Ochieng (U14 years) of Mavens Chess Club winning the event with 5 points to go home with KES 20,000 and a trophy.
Seseniah Akwe Omari (U14 years) of Litlife Chess Club and Shannon Bulimo grabbed second place, sharing KES 25,000 equally. Shanon had a lower tiebreak and was therefore third in the ranking. All three players took home beautiful trophies.
This section had 22 participants and was part of the Kenya Grand Prix Circuit.
