IM Arthur Ssegwanyi wins Rwanda Open

IM Arthur Ssegwanyi of Uganda is the winner of the 2020 Rwanda Open. He won all six rounds to walk away with a modest cash prize of RWF 300,000 (USD 320).

IM Arthur Ssegwanyi’s performance over the past few months has been very impressive. He won the Rwabushenyi Open in December 2020 and a month later the 4th Kireka Open.

CM Bob Bibasa also of Uganda was second with 5 points and he went home with RWF 200,000 (USD 220).

The three-day hotly contested event ran from 1st to 3rd February 2020 at the Classic Hotel, in Kigali. A total of 49 players from nine federations took part in this prestigious event. These included Burundi, Scotland, Afghanistan, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Swaziland, Uganda and host Rwanda.

Gideon Izuchukwu, Dieudonne Muheto, Godfrey Kabera and Saveur Bikorimana, were joint third, with 4.5 points each.

Naftaly Mwangi was the only player from Kenya. He scored 3 points to end 20th in the ranking.

Rwanda Chess Federation

The Rwanda Chess Federation has been fairly active over the past few months.  The federation organised the 2019 Rwanda National Championship in December 2019.
