CM Egesa Emmanuel wins 2024 SOM Open Easter Chess Championship
CM Emmanuel Egesa was crowned the inaugural SOM Open Easter Chess Championship winner. He scored seven points out of eight rounds, his best performance to date.
FM Patrick Kawuma scored seven points but ended in second place with a lower tiebreak. CM Emmanuel Egesa and FM Patrick Kawuma equally shared the cash prize of UGX 1.75 million (USD 450).
The Open Section of the tournament witnessed a fierce battle among over 60 contestants, all vying for the coveted top honours.
In the Ladies Section, Patricia Kawuma emerged as the champion, securing seven points out of eight rounds. Her victory earned her a cash prize of UGX 1 million, a well-deserved reward for her exceptional performance.
Milly Takali was second with 6.5 points, while WCM Shakira Ampaire was third with the same 6.5 points but a lower tiebreak.
The Ladies Section had 20 players. It is interesting to point out the event had the same prize fund for both the Open and the Ladies Section.
The SOM Open Easter Chess Championship ran over the Easter weekend from 29th March to 1st April 2024 at the SOM Chess Academy in Katwe.
